Historic Moment as Tori Penso Becomes First Female Referee at Men's World Cup

2 hours ago·1 min

A historic chapter in football officiating will be written on 18 June when American referee Tori Penso takes charge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A fixture between South Africa and Czech Republic — becoming the first woman to officiate a men's World Cup match.

Bafana Bafana will face Czech Republic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with kick-off scheduled for 18h00 South African time. The match comes just days after South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening Group A game.

An all-American officiating team

Penso will not be alone in making history. Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt will serve as her assistant referees, completing an all-American officiating trio for the occasion. Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh from New Zealand has been named as the fourth official.

The appointment represents a landmark moment for women in men's football administration, with the South Africa versus Czech Republic fixture serving as the stage for this milestone.

Broos faces selection headache

Beyond the historic officiating storyline, coach Hugo Broos faces significant selection challenges ahead of the match. Siphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane both received red cards during the loss to Mexico, ruling them out and forcing Broos to reshape his starting XI.

South Africa need a positive result against Czech Republic to keep their World Cup campaign alive after the opening defeat left them at the foot of Group A.
