The FIFA World Cup 2026™ group-stage encounter between Germany and Curaçao carved its place in history on two counts. Beyond being Curaçao's first-ever appearance at the World Cup, it became the first match in the tournament's history to feature an entirely female on-field medical team.
The milestone was achieved on June 14 in Houston, where FIFA Match Doctor Dr Emma Lunan, Curaçao Team Doctor Dr Suzanne Huurman, Germany Team Doctor Dr Silja Schwarz, Emergency Medicine Doctor Dr Carrie Bakunas, and injury spotter Dr Kerry Peek formed the complete medical crew for the match.
A landmark for football medicine
FIFA Director of Medical Dr Andrew Massey described the moment as a powerful symbol of progress and expressed hope that it would encourage more women to pursue leadership positions in football medicine.
