Houston has found a colourful way to mark its place in FIFA World Cup 2026 history. More than 150 oversized, hand-painted fibreglass football sculptures are currently spread across Space City, blending local artistry with the energy of the global tournament.
A project years in the making
The Art of Soccer initiative was first launched in 2019, when Houston was still campaigning to become a host city. It was relaunched last September as anticipation for the FIFA World Cup 2026 reached fever pitch. The sculptures — each a 36-inch fibreglass ball — were designed by regional artists and supported financially by small businesses, community institutions, and economic development organisations.
The installations have appeared at some of Houston's most recognisable venues, including the POST Houston entertainment complex, the Four Seasons Hotel, Houston Public Library, and the FIFA Fan Festival. Discovery Green, the Ion District, Houston Farmers' Market, Helix Park, and The Galleria have also hosted pieces from the collection.
Artists put Houston at the heart of every ball
Artist Alex Roman Jr., better known by his alias Donkeeboy, threw himself into the project with particular enthusiasm — ultimately contributing around 15 sculptures.
