England's World Cup campaign has hit a significant wall, with Thomas Tuchel's side failing to score in 135 minutes of football heading into the half-time break against Panama — their second successive goalless stalemate at the 2026 World Cup.
The Three Lions opened the tournament with a positive showing against Croatia, netting twice in each half. Since that victory, however, England have produced just 28 shots — an xG rate of just 0.06 per attempt — without a single goal to show for it.
Wright calls for Toney
Speaking during the interval, former England striker Ian Wright identified a specific solution to the attacking impasse: Ivan Toney. Wright argued that England are lacking a physical presence capable of holding the ball up and bringing teammates into play.
