Ibrahima Konate in Advanced Talks to Join Real Madrid on a Free Transfer

France centre-back Ibrahima Konate is closing in on a free transfer to Real Madrid, with the two parties understood to be in advanced negotiations over a move to the Bernabeu this summer.
Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that Konate would depart when his contract expires at the end of June, ending his four-year spell at the club. According to the Daily Telegraph, an agreement between Konate and Real Madrid is edging closer.
Contract talks broke down over wages
The 27-year-old had entered into discussions with Liverpool about extending his deal, but those conversations collapsed after the two sides failed to bridge a gap over his valuation and wage demands.
Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions, contributing to a remarkable trophy haul that included the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two League Cup titles during his time on Merseyside.
Second Liverpool star to make the switch
He originally arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, and his departure will mark the second consecutive summer in which Liverpool have lost a player to Real Madrid without receiving a fee — following Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to the Spanish capital last year.
Should the deal be confirmed, Konate will link up with one of the most decorated clubs in European football as Real Madrid continue to bolster their defensive options heading into next season.
