Ilechukwu Signs New One-Year Deal to Stay at Rangers International

5 days ago·2 min

Fidelis Ilechukwu has committed his future to Rangers International, signing a new one-year contract that ends any uncertainty over his position at the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions.

The extension ensures continuity at the Enugu-based club as they prepare to defend their NPFL title and step up to face continental competition in the CAF Champions League next season.

A title-winning partnership

Ilechukwu, 47, arrived at Rangers in 2023 having built a reputation as one of the shrewdest tacticians in Nigerian football. His impact was immediate — the Flying Antelopes lifted their eighth NPFL title in his first season in charge, the 2023/24 campaign.

He then delivered the club's ninth league crown on the final matchday of the 2025/26 season, a 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, sealing the championship in dramatic fashion.

With this renewal, Ilechukwu enters a fourth consecutive season at the helm — an unusually long tenure in a league where managerial changes come frequently. He previously managed both Plateau United and Heartland before taking charge of Rangers, and he also serves as an assistant coach in the Super Eagles' technical crew.

Continental ambitions

Rangers' continental record offers plenty of motivation heading into next season. In the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, the Coal City club were eliminated in the second preliminary round by Angolan side Sagrada Esperança, losing 3-1 on aggregate. They had won the opening leg 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, only to fall 3-0 in the return fixture in Luanda.

Nigerian clubs have been absent from the summit of African football for more than two decades — Enyimba remain the country's last CAF Champions League winners, claiming back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004. Ilechukwu and Rangers will be determined to end that drought.
