Injury Concerns Mount for Liverpool and Manchester United After Nations League Scares
Liverpool and Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of two key players after both Cody Gakpo and Patrick Dorgu were forced off during Sunday's Nations League fixtures.
Gakpo limped out of the Netherlands' clash with Serbia in Belgrade after just 17 minutes, raising alarm bells at Anfield. The forward had been on the receiving end of a firm challenge from Sasa Lukic 12 minutes in — initially appearing as though he could continue before signalling to the bench that he needed to come off. Ruben van Bommel came on as his replacement.
The timing is particularly concerning for Liverpool, who are already missing Alexander Isak — the Sweden striker departed the international camp early to return to Merseyside for assessment after scoring against Romania on Friday. Manager Andoni Iraola's squad also remains without long-term absentees Giovanni Leoni, Hugo Ekitike, and Conor Bradley ahead of their home fixture against Manchester City on 11 October.
Gakpo, 27, has contributed two goals and four assists across six appearances in all competitions this season. Liverpool supporters will be anxious to learn the severity of Sunday's setback before the Premier League resumes.
Meanwhile, United face their own mounting injury worries. Dorgu lasted just over half an hour for Denmark against Wales before limping down the tunnel in the 31st minute, replaced by Mohamed Daramy. The versatile full-back's exit adds to the club's concerns heading into a busy domestic schedule.
Compounding United's problems, captain Bruno Fernandes has been ruled out of Portugal's away match in Norway due to injury — dealing a further blow to a squad already stretched thin by the international window.
