Inter Lagos Hit With N5.25m Fine, Points and Goals Deducted After Officials Assaulted

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed Inter Lagos a combined fine of N5.25 million and stripped the club of three points and three goals following violent attacks on match officials after their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The league announced the sanctions on its official X account on Monday, citing multiple serious breaches of the NPFL27 Framework and Rules.

What happened after the final whistle

Inter Lagos drew 1-1 with Katsina United at home, but the post-match events proved far more damaging than the result itself. Club officials and supporters allowed unauthorized individuals into restricted areas, where match officials were attacked as they made their way from the dressing room to their vehicle.

The officials were then held hostage for more than an hour after the final whistle — a situation the NPFL described as a clear failure by Inter Lagos to ensure the proper conduct of their officials and supporters.

The club's team manager, alongside a number of supporters, went further — physically assaulting the match officials. The first assistant referee suffered a facial injury and lost personal belongings, including a damaged mobile telephone.

Breakdown of sanctions

The NPFL issued fines across several categories. Inter Lagos were fined N2 million for failing to provide adequate security, N1 million for holding the officials hostage, and a further N2 million for the assault on officials. An additional N250,000 was ordered as direct compensation to the injured assistant referee, covering his medical treatment and the loss of personal items.

Three points and three goals have been deducted from Inter Lagos's tally for causing physical harm to the first assistant referee — the most severe sporting punishment in the package of sanctions.

The club have 48 hours from the date of notification to lodge an appeal.

Where Inter Lagos stand

The sanctions worsen an already difficult start to the season for the Lagos side. Inter Lagos are currently 19th in the NPFL standings with five points from seven matches — and that tally was recorded before Monday's deductions were applied.
