Ipswich Town vs Sunderland: Premier League 2026/27 Opening Weekend Preview

Ipswich Town kick off the 2026/27 Premier League season at Portman Road on Saturday 22 August, hosting Sunderland in what promises to be a compelling opening-day fixture. Kick-off is at 3:00pm BST.
New manager, new chapter for Ipswich
The Tractor Boys earned promotion from the Championship as runners-up last season, securing an immediate return to the top flight following their relegation in 2024/25. However, the architect of that rise, Kieran McKenna — who guided Ipswich from mid-table in League One all the way to the Premier League — stepped down as manager in June.
Gary O'Neil, formerly in charge at Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has taken on the challenge of building on McKenna's foundations. Should O'Neil keep Ipswich in the division, he will have achieved something his celebrated predecessor could not.
Ipswich have backed their new manager in the transfer market. A spend of approximately £150 million puts them on course to surpass even Sunderland's record £161 million summer outlay for a promoted club last year. New arrivals Julio Enciso, Emersonn, and Abdul Fatawu are expected to feature and will be eager to make an early impression.
Sunderland face a tougher second season
Sunderland arrive at Portman Road on the back of a remarkable 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish seventh — one of the most surprising results of last season. Manager Regis Le Bris has earned widespread praise for transforming the Black Cats into a competitive top-flight side so swiftly.
The challenge this term is considerably steeper. Sunderland must balance Premier League survival with European football for the first time in 53 years — a dual burden that has derailed many a promoted side before them.
Le Bris has adopted a quality-over-quantity approach in the transfer market this summer. Belgium full-back Thomas Meunier, signed on a free transfer from Lille, is the most notable new face, meaning the squad that faces Ipswich will closely resemble the one that ended last season so impressively.
How and where to watch
The match falls under the UK's 3pm blackout rule and will not be broadcast in Britain. Fans in the US can watch live on Peacock, where kick-off is at 10:00am ET. Australian supporters can stream the game on Stan Sport, with play beginning at 12:00am AEST on Sunday morning.
FourFourTwo predicts the match will end 1-1, with both sides likely to show caution on an opening day full of uncertainty.
