ITV Pundits Rave About Ivory Coast's Yan Diomande as Liverpool Interest Grows

Yan Diomande delivered another electrifying first half at the FIFA World Cup 2026, leaving Germany's experienced right-back Joshua Kimmich in his wake and drawing lavish praise from ITV studio pundits Gary Neville and Ian Wright.
Ivory Coast led Germany 1-0 at the break in Group E, with Julian Nagelsmann's side unable to find a way through a resolute Ivorian defensive block — and unable to contain the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger on the other end.
Kimmich left toiling
Neville, a former England right-back, spoke candidly about Kimmich's ordeal. "He's one of the most experienced right-backs in the world, and he's toiling in this first half," Neville said. "He looks afraid of Diomande — and look, he's a 19-year-old kid. They've had 56 per cent of their attacks down that side, which is massive."
Neville drew on personal experience to illustrate just how uncomfortable the situation must feel for Kimmich. "I've been there as an ageing right-back when you've got a young kid who's fearless, and it's not pleasant," he added.
Wright insists Diomande has lived up to the hype
Wright was equally effusive, arguing that the Ivorian had surpassed expectations. "He's definitely lived up to the hype," Wright said. "After the hydration break, they just took over. In particular, Diomande has just gone to another level in this game — he's completely lived up to the hype. His pressing is brilliant, his taking players on is brilliant; he's just absolutely tearing them to pieces."
Neville echoed those concerns for Germany's backline, warning that the problem would not solve itself in the second half. "When you've got someone who's skilful, can go both ways, and is quick, you need support," he said. "They can't keep leaving this guy one-on-one, or else they'll concede again."
Liverpool among the suitors
Diomande had already turned heads the previous week, when he dominated Arsenal's Piero Hincapie, and his latest showing has only intensified speculation around his future. The RB Leipzig forward is heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and, on this evidence, it is easy to understand why Premier League clubs are circling.
Germany must now find a tactical answer to Diomande when the two sides reconvene for the second half — with Neville suggesting Leroy Sané may need to drop back and support Kimmich if Nagelsmann's men are to keep their Group E campaign alive.
