James Milner Retires at 40 After Record-Breaking 24-Year Premier League Career

James Milner, the Premier League's all-time record appearance holder, has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 24-season top-flight career.
Milner made 658 Premier League appearances across six clubs — a record no other player has matched. His journey in the English top flight began at Leeds United, where he made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2002 and became the competition's youngest-ever scorer. He subsequently represented Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, and Brighton, with a brief loan spell at Swindon also part of his story.
His final chapter at Brighton saw him help the club qualify for European competition for only the second time in their history — a feat he achieved at 40 years old.
"After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League's youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I've been on," Milner said.
Milner reflected on a career that took him from a relegation battle to title triumphs, European nights, and international duty with England. Yet it was the human side of football he chose to emphasise most.
"More than anything, it is the people and friendships I've made throughout my time in the game I will cherish forever," he said. "I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life."
The midfielder also paid tribute to his family, crediting their sacrifices and support as essential to everything he achieved across more than two decades at the highest level.
Milner departs as one of English football's most enduring professionals — a player whose consistency, versatility, and longevity set a standard that may never be surpassed.
