"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25," McKenzie wrote on X. "South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters."

Adams featured in South Africa's opening two Group A fixtures at the tournament — against Mexico and Czechia. He started the match against Czechia and was substituted at halftime, having taken to the field just hours after learning of his grandmother's death.

His final social media post, a photograph shared with his girlfriend on Instagram, appeared less than 24 hours before news of his passing broke.

A generation-defining loss

Adams played a meaningful role in one of South African football's proudest recent chapters — helping Bafana Bafana reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.

Before joining Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Adams spent several seasons at Stellenbosch. With Sundowns, he was part of the squad that won the CAF Champions League this year, adding a continental honour to a career that had only just begun to reach its ceiling.

McKenzie urged the public and media to refrain from speculation around the circumstances of Adams's death. "The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed," he said.
