Jimmy-Jay Morgan has made an instant impression at West Bromwich Albion, registering three goals and three assists in his first six Championship appearances to lead the club in both categories.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at the West Midlands club in June, signing a four-year contract after leaving Chelsea. His route to the second tier was shaped by a pair of loan spells that toughened him considerably — first at Gillingham in League Two in January 2025, then at Peterborough United in League One for much of last season, where he scored at a rate better than once every three matches.

Morgan's formation: from Poole to Chelsea to Pride Park

Born in Poole, part of the BCP conurbation that also encompasses Bournemouth and Christchurch, Morgan joined Chelsea at the age of eight. He spent six years back on the south coast at Southampton midway through his junior career before returning to Chelsea's academy in Surrey. When Chelsea began planning his development away from Stamford Bridge, those lower-league loans proved to be exactly the preparation he needed.

His first month at Albion has already produced a standout moment. Morgan was on the pitch when West Brom went top of the Championship following a 1-0 win at Derby County — a result that arrived against the odds after debutant Brayann Pereira was sent off in the 34th minute. The winning goal came from a Morgan pass that set up Aune Heggebo to prod home following a Callum Styles run down the left flank.

Leading the line alone — and winning the crowd

With Albion reduced to ten men and Heggebo withdrawn at the interval, Morgan spent the entire second half leading the line on his own at Pride Park. It is rarely a glamorous assignment, yet he embraced it — winning three free kicks through sheer physical persistence and earning warm appreciation from the travelling Albion supporters.
