JJ Gabriel Yet to Decide His Future as Europe's Giants Circle Man Utd Teenager

4 hours ago·3 min

JJ Gabriel and his family have yet to reach a decision on the 16-year-old's future, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain all tracking the Manchester United prodigy closely.

Gabriel turned 16 on Tuesday — the age at which European clubs may offer him a professional contract — and it is increasingly likely that his next destination will be on the continent. He is also eligible to apply for a European passport through either of his parents, which could play a decisive role in any move.

A fractured relationship with United

Gabriel still appears in Manchester United's official squad photo for the 2026/27 season, though that image was taken on September 8 — before his family submitted a formal request for him to leave the club. He has not trained with United since.

Sky Sports News understands that multiple attempts have been made to resolve the situation, with duty of care cited as a particular concern given Gabriel's age, yet no progress has been achieved. Manchester United believe they have done everything possible to demonstrate a clear pathway to the first team, including having Gabriel train alongside the senior squad during pre-season and granting him a debut appearance against Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly.

However, Gabriel's camp felt eight to nine minutes off the bench in that game fell well short of expectations. The family had also insisted he should not report back with the under-21 squad at the start of pre-season, believing it was beneath his level, and requested instead that he train exclusively with the first team.

The demands that strained both sides

Gabriel and his family demanded he receive at least 20 minutes of first-team action in three specific fixtures — against Sabah in the UEFA Champions League, Brighton in the FA Cup, and Bournemouth in the Premier League on October 25 — before any scholarship contract negotiations could begin.

Gabriel was ultimately ineligible for the Sabah tie because he had not been placed on Manchester United's A-list for the UEFA Champions League. Instead, he represented the club in the UEFA Youth League that day and delivered a hat-trick against the Azerbaijani side.

Now that he has turned 16, Gabriel would automatically be added to United's B-list and become eligible for matchday squads — something his family considers a moment that should already have been seized.

Legal action on the table

Sky Sports News has reported that Manchester United will consider legal action should Gabriel depart for a European club through what the club describes as a FIFA loophole — a provision that may allow him to join a European side following his 16th birthday if he secures a European passport.

Nevertheless, this threat is understood to hold little concern for Gabriel and those advising him. Club sources suggest the shift in attitude from Gabriel's family — particularly around the Sabah fixture — may stem from promises made by another European club or from representatives acting on the teenager's behalf.

Manchester United maintain they remain the best environment for Gabriel's long-term development. Yet with talks already having taken place between his camp and clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid, the prospect of Gabriel pulling on a United shirt again appears increasingly remote.
