Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes is on the verge of completing a move to Aston Villa in a deal valued at £38m, with the Brazil international departing Wolves' training camp in Portugal ahead of a medical scheduled for Thursday.

The transfer is structured as an initial £34m fee, with a further £4m available through add-ons. Atletico Madrid had shown strong interest in Gomes but failed to finalise any agreement.

Why Villa need Gomes

Aston Villa have found themselves short in midfield following two significant developments. They sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m, while Amadou Onana faces a lengthy absence after suffering a serious knee injury on international duty with Belgium at the World Cup — ruling him out until next year.

The club are also closing in on a second major signing, with Switzerland international Johan Manzambi set to arrive from Freiburg for a club record fee exceeding £50m.

Gomes' time at Wolves

Gomes joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Flamengo in 2023 and went on to make 130 appearances for the club, contributing seven goals. Last season, he featured 41 times as Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League and were relegated.
