Johan Manzambi Emerges as Aston Villa's Best-Value Summer Signing

1 hour ago·3 min

Johan Manzambi has wasted little time announcing himself to the Premier League. The 21-year-old, who joined Aston Villa from Eintracht Frankfurt for £47m in the summer, arrived with a knee injury that delayed his debut until mid-September — but he has since taken off at remarkable speed.

A study by Sky Sports' Between the Lines strand placed Manzambi among the best-value signings of the summer window, behind only Marcos Senesi and Harry Wilson, both of whom arrived on free transfers. His market-adjusted value at the time of the deal was estimated at £74.8m, making the £47m fee look shrewd in hindsight.

Explosive start to life in Birmingham

Manzambi marked his full debut against Tottenham Hotspur with a goal and an assist, and he has not stopped since. He netted again in Villa's UEFA Champions League rout of Fenerbahce on Wednesday, having provided an assist four days earlier in the league against Brentford. Across all competitions, he is averaging 1.27 goal involvements per 90 minutes — one of the highest rates in the Premier League this season.

The sample size remains small — just 284 minutes of action — but Manzambi arrived with a proven pedigree at the highest level. At the FIFA World Cup 2026, he scored twice in 19 minutes as a substitute in Switzerland's win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and finished the tournament with three goals and two assists in 200 minutes. It was that tournament form that attracted both Villa and Newcastle United to his signature, with Villa ultimately winning the race.

A whirlwind in the final third

Against Brentford, Manzambi registered seven shots — the second-most by any player in a single Premier League game this season — and created three chances. His combined total of ten was second only to Bruno Fernandes' 11 in Manchester United's win over Ipswich.

Manager Unai Emery has used him primarily as a No 10, though Manzambi also started on the left against Brentford and can operate deeper. Against Fenerbahce, he drifted intelligently into the spaces vacated by Morgan Rogers — who departed for Chelsea — and linked up smoothly with fellow summer arrivals Ibrahim Mbaye and Nicolas Jackson in a revamped front three.

His most eye-catching moment in that match came before the half-hour mark: collecting the ball on the left flank, he powered past one defender, drove inside away from a second, and delivered a perfectly weighted through-ball for a charging Mbaye. Speed, strength, guile, and precision — all in a single passage of play. According to Opta, Manzambi leads all Villa players for line-breaking passes leading to shots this season, despite having played fewer minutes than most of his team-mates.

His goal against Fenerbahce and his earlier strike against Tottenham Hotspur both illustrated the same intelligence: a calm, purposeful movement into pockets of space at the critical moment. Villa will hope he continues that form at St James' Park on Saturday, when he faces Newcastle United — the club he chose not to join.

Janelt anchors Brentford's unbeaten run

Aston Villa are not the only side riding Champions League momentum. Liverpool put six past LASK but now face a stern test at Brentford, where Vitaly Janelt has been one of the Premier League's most effective midfielders.

The 28-year-old has made the most tackles and interceptions in the Premier League this season, totalling 38 — seven more than the next closest player. He ranks third for distance covered, and Brentford boss Keith Andrews described his output as
