Jon Martin Commits to Real Sociedad Despite Europe's Biggest Clubs Circling

Jon Martin has made clear that he has no intention of leaving Real Sociedad any time soon, despite reported interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, and several leading Premier League clubs. The 20-year-old centre-back says the connection he feels to the Basque club goes far deeper than football.

"I have always said that this is my home," Martin told Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's Basque derby against Athletic Club at San Mames. "I have been here since I was 12. The feeling of belonging and of wanting to be here is something I feel from inside."

A defender destined for the top

Martin has emerged as one of the most coveted young defenders on the continent. He made his debut for Spain in the summer and is widely seen as a potential long-term partner for Pau Cubarsi at the heart of the national team's defence. In La Liga, he rates above average across most defensive metrics — a remarkable achievement for a player his age.

His technical quality, range of passing, and composure on the ball have drawn comparisons with the very best. He was a key figure as Real Sociedad claimed the Copa del Rey under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo in April, and the club remain serious contenders in the UEFA Europa League this season.

The Matarazzo effect

Martin credits Matarazzo — an American coach who has instilled a bold, attacking philosophy at Real Sociedad — as a significant influence on his growth. "He sees that we are a very brave team and that we like to do daring things," Martin said. "What I like about him is that he is very close to us and he is a coach that we can really trust. And for young players like me, that is something we really appreciate."

"Personally, I am very happy working with this coach," he added. "Everything I need to perform at a top level is here at this club."

Derby passion and a father's guidance

The eve of a Basque derby has a particular charge for Martin. Five of his first 27 starts for Real Sociedad came against Athletic Club — a rivalry he describes as carrying "tremendous passion." "I would invite everyone who has the chance to come and watch these matches, in either stadium. The atmosphere is fantastic," he said.

Behind the scenes, his father — himself a former Real Sociedad player whose career was curtailed by injury — serves as a trusted sounding board. "My father is an important pillar for me," Martin said. "He has experienced this type of situation, so he really knows what it is all about to be out there on the pitch. He always tells me to feel calm before this type of match."

With the Spanish Super Cup on the horizon this winter and a genuine shot at glory in the UEFA Europa League in May, Martin has every reason to stay put. For now, his attention is fixed solely on Athletic Club. "I have to focus on that," he said, "and offer my best performance."
