Jonathan Pearce and Efan Ekoku to Call South Africa vs South Korea on BBC

1 hour ago·2 min

A World Cup knockout stage berth hangs in the balance as South Africa face South Korea in a decisive Group A encounter at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Mexico. Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm local time — 2am in the United Kingdom.

The BBC hold broadcast rights to the match and will air it on BBC Two. The clash runs simultaneously with the Group A fixture between Czech Republic and Mexico, which will be carried on a separate BBC broadcast.

No studio panel for this one

Viewers tuning in should not expect a pundit or presenter line-up for the game. The BBC have opted to go without a studio panel, in keeping with their recent approach to fixtures falling in the early hours of the British morning.

The broadcaster made the same call earlier in the evening, choosing not to assemble a panel for Haiti vs Morocco — a match that kicked off at the same time as Brazil vs Scotland.

Commentary team

Jonathan Pearce will serve as the lead commentator for South Africa vs South Korea, with Efan Ekoku alongside him in the co-commentary role.

Second place in Group A remains wide open heading into this fixture. South Korea know that a draw would be enough to secure their passage to the knockout stage, as runners-up behind Mexico — though overtaking the co-hosts at the summit is beyond their reach regardless of results.

South Africa, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win of the tournament. Victory over South Korea could lift Bafana Bafana into second place, depending on how Czech Republic fare against Mexico. Even short of that, a positive result could leave them well placed to advance as one of the better third-placed sides.
