Nigerian striker Josh Maja has joined French top-flight club Le Havre on a free transfer, completing a move that reunites him with Ligue 1 football after several seasons in England.

Maja arrived at Le Havre following his departure from West Bromwich Albion, whose contract expired at the end of last season. The 27-year-old declined to renew his deal with the Sky Bet Championship side and has instead put pen to paper on a one-year contract at the Stade Océane, with an option for a further 12 months. He will wear the No. 9 shirt.

The signing represents a homecoming of sorts for Maja, who built his reputation in France during a four-and-a-half-year stint with Girondins Bordeaux. Between January 2019 and June 2023, the former Sunderland forward struck 25 goals in 85 league outings for Les Girondins, cementing his status as one of their most reliable attacking threats before crossing to England.

Le Havre will hope Maja rediscovers that clinical edge as they gear up for the new Ligue 1 campaign. His three seasons at West Bromwich Albion were hampered by persistent injury problems, yet he still managed 17 goals in 64 Championship appearances for the Baggies — a testament to his quality when fit.

With France already familiar ground, Maja will be eager to put his injury troubles behind him and establish himself once again among Ligue 1's most dangerous centre-forwards.
