Kane's Golden Moment: England Captain Eyes Ballon d'Or Glory at Potentially Final World Cup

Harry Kane arrives at the FIFA World Cup 2026 carrying the weight of an entire nation's hopes — and, perhaps, the most compelling individual story of the tournament. This could be his final World Cup, and it also represents his strongest-ever case for the Ballon d'Or.
Turning 33 this summer, Kane has acknowledged the possibility that this tournament could be his last, though he has also stated his ambition to feature at the UEFA European Championship on home soil in 2028. A place at the 2030 World Cup, when he would be approaching 37, is far less certain.
Record-breaking form
Kane steps onto the world stage riding a wave of form never before seen from a player heading into a World Cup. His 67 goals for Bayern Munich and England this season — including 10 in his last 11 international appearances — surpasses every single-season tally ever recorded ahead of a World Cup. That total eclipses Cristiano Ronaldo's benchmark from the 2013-14 season by six goals.
"I've been scoring a lot more goals than in any previous season," Kane said on the eve of the tournament. "Winning the league and the cup final, scoring three goals there — that gave me even more momentum coming into the camp with the boys."
Ballon d'Or picture
England have not produced a Ballon d'Or winner since Michael Owen claimed the award in 2001. Kane now stands as the most credible candidate to end that 25-year drought. He has already secured three domestic trophies with Bayern Munich this season, and he himself believes a strong World Cup could prove decisive.
"With the season I've had, winning the three trophies, the numbers I've reached — I think I'll be in that conversation," Kane said. "If I win the World Cup on top of that, you would imagine it would be one of the England players. When you look at past winners of the Ballon d'Or, it comes down to the big games, the big tournaments."
Kane has never finished higher than 10th in Ballon d'Or voting since 2017. That, too, must change this summer if he is to claim football's most coveted individual prize.
Fitness concerns put to rest
One shadow over Kane's tournament preparations has been the question of fatigue. At UEFA Euro 2024, despite a superb debut season at Bayern in which he scored 44 goals, Kane visibly ran out of steam in the latter stages. Manager Gareth Southgate withdrew him at half-time in every knockout match beyond the quarter-finals.
His current manager, Thomas Tuchel, has moved to dismiss those concerns ahead of England's opener against Croatia. "The most important thing is the shape Harry is in — he is in top shape, he is ready to go," Tuchel said. "He was the leading player who set the intensity in training, on a defensive training day. We don't have to be worried about him at all."
Kane himself echoed that confidence. "From a physical point of view, I feel in great shape," he said. "Throughout your career, you need a lot of things to go your way and fall into place at the right time. It has for this tournament. It's one of the best opportunities we all have as a team to win it."
Everything is aligned. The form, the trophies, the tournament — and for Kane, the time to step out of the top ten and claim the top spot is now.
