Kane Scores, Assists, and Takes a Goal-Kick to Boost Ballon d'Or Bid

Harry Kane delivered one of the performances of the Champions League campaign on Wednesday night, scoring, registering an assist, and — in a moment that has since captured the football world's imagination — stepping up to take a goal-kick during Bayern Munich's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

With the match still scoreless inside the opening 25 minutes, Kane seized the initiative by striding toward his own goal-line and launching an 80-yard pass that nearly unlocked the Arsenal defence. It was an act of audacity that left observers stunned, yet the Bayern players in front of him ran forward without hesitation — a sign of the extraordinary trust the squad has placed in their number nine.

A freedom unlike any other

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha, speaking to BBC Sport, attributed Kane's expanding role to manager Vincent Kompany. "Under Vincent Kompany, he has been given a level of trust that he has probably never had before under any other manager," Onuoha said.

Onuoha pointed to the telling detail that even Manuel Neuer — one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the game — simply stood aside and let Kane take the kick. "He lets Harry go for it because he thinks whatever he sees is going to be correct," Onuoha added.

"Having freedom is probably the best way to describe what he has got playing for Bayern, because he will work hard defensively, which allows him the freedom to be creative when he is in attack. For now, he certainly is thriving."

A decisive night at the Allianz Arena

The goal-kick moment was not Kane's only contribution. After Eberechi Eze gave Arsenal the lead, Kane curved a sumptuous pass around Jurrien Timber to set up Alphonso Davies, who equalised. Kane then stepped up from the penalty spot midway through the second half to put Bayern in front, taking his career tally against Arsenal to 16 goals.

Declan Rice struck late to secure a point for Arsenal, ensuring the match finished 2-2 — but Kane's performance was the story of the night.

Closing in on Ballon d'Or history

The result extended one of the most remarkable individual streaks in Champions League history: Kane has now scored in 10 consecutive matches in the competition. The only other player ever to achieve that feat was Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in 11 successive Champions League appearances for Real Madrid between June 2017 and April 2018.

It adds considerable weight to Kane's candidacy for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. The 33-year-old, who has scored 156 goals in 158 appearances since joining Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, is widely considered the frontrunner. He would become the first Englishman to claim the award since Michael Owen in 2001, with Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Paris St-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele — the current holder — among those also in contention.

Kane was named on the 30-man shortlist in September, and the winner is due to be announced on Monday following a vote by an international jury of 100 journalists.

Rice, who faced Kane on Wednesday after playing alongside him for England, was unequivocal in his assessment. "He is the clear winner. His numbers speak for themselves. The year he has had has been remarkable," the Arsenal midfielder told TNT Sports. "When you play with him, you realise how good he is, and when you play against him, you see how much of a pain it is."

Kane himself struck a measured tone after the match. "It would be amazing to win," he said. "The voting closed a long time ago so there's nothing I can do, just wait and see what happens."
