Keane and Fernandes Patch Things Up After Assist Record Row

Roy Keane and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes have resolved their public dispute, with the former United midfielder revealing the pair shared a "lovely chat" after a misquote sparked a bitter falling-out between them.
The row erupted in May, when Keane — speaking on The Overlap podcast during the penultimate round of Premier League fixtures — questioned Fernandes' attitude and suggested the Portuguese was more interested in personal records than team results. He described the situation around Fernandes as a "circus act" and claimed the captain had said "I probably should have shot but I made them passes" in a post-match interview following Manchester United's 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.
Fernandes fires back
Fernandes was quick to deny the claim, calling it a "lie" and pointing out that his actual words after the Nottingham Forest match were: "There were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot. I'm very happy for the assist, but more than that, I'm happy for the win and to finish the season on a high."
The dispute came at a significant moment — Fernandes went on to break the record for the most assists in a single Premier League season on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign, setting up his 21st league goal of the season against Brighton.
A mature conversation
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast on Wednesday, Keane confirmed that Fernandes had reached out and that the two men spoke directly to clear the air.
"There was a reaction after what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat — I called him and we had a lovely chat," Keane said.
Keane was candid about the value of direct communication, admitting that podcasts and broadcasts can sometimes distort meaning. He noted that, while he prefers to keep a degree of distance from active players, he felt it was important to take Fernandes' call in this instance.
"He's obviously a big player for United, I'm an ex-United player and I think the idea of this communicating and having a proper conversation, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully I think he did as well. Nice chat about a bit of everything and I felt better afterwards," Keane added.
The pair's reconciliation draws a line under one of the more colourful off-pitch stories of the 2025-26 Premier League season.
