Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana has spoken warmly about teammates Ime Okon and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, praising the young South African pair for their impressive displays during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Okon and Mbokazi formed a dependable defensive partnership throughout Bafana Bafana's campaign, helping the nation reach the Round of 32 for the first time in their history — a milestone achievement for South African football.
The journey came to an end in that round, where South Africa suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against co-hosts Canada. Stephen Eustaquio proved the difference, converting the decisive strike in the 2nd minute of stoppage time to send Bafana Bafana home.
Kekana's message to the next generation
Speaking to Sowetan, Kekana expressed enormous pride in the performances of the two young defenders, making clear he believes the national team's backline is in capable hands for years to come.
