Kompany Discharged from Hospital After Training Collapse

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing during a training session last week, the club's board member for sports Max Eberl confirmed on Wednesday.

Kompany was rushed to hospital after falling ill at Bayern's training ground during a second-team session. Medical staff have since confirmed the collapse was caused by a meningeal irritation.

"Given the circumstances, he's doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today [Wednesday]. That is the biggest and best news for all of us,"
Eberl told broadcaster ARD ahead of the German Cup clash against Magdeburg, which Bayern won 6-1.

Eberl added: "It's a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent."

No return date has been set. Eberl stressed that the Belgian manager will only resume his duties once he receives full medical clearance.

Danks stepping in

In Kompany's absence, his assistant Aaron Danks has assumed control of the squad. The Englishman took charge of Bayern's 3-1 victory at Freiburg on Sunday and will continue in the role until Kompany is cleared to return.

Earlier in the week, Kompany had been absent from media duties ahead of Bayern's UEFA Champions League fixture against Arsenal due to a viral infection, though he did manage to take his place in the dugout for the 2-2 draw.

Bayern Munich, who lead the Bundesliga, face title rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in what promises to be a pivotal top-of-the-table encounter.
