Liverpool have confirmed that centre-back Ibrahima Konate will leave Anfield at the end of June when his contract expires, departing on a free transfer after five years at the club.

Negotiations over a contract extension broke down without an agreement, bringing a close to a spell that began when Konate arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

A trophy-laden chapter

In total, Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals. His time on Merseyside yielded a remarkable haul of honours — a Premier League title winner's medal from the 2024-25 season, two Carabao Cup triumphs, an FA Cup, and an FA Community Shield.

Liverpool paid tribute to the France international in an official statement on liverpoolfc.com, expressing gratitude for his contributions and wishing him well in the next stage of his career.

An emotional farewell

Konate released a heartfelt message to supporters, describing himself as "deeply saddened" that he was unable to say a proper farewell at Anfield during the final game of the season — not knowing at the time it would be his last appearance in a Liverpool shirt in front of the home faithful.

"Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life," Konate wrote.

He paid tribute to the togetherness of the dressing room, singling out the grief shared by all at the club following the passing of teammate Diogo Jota's brother, and also opened up about the personal loss of his own father during the season.

"Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods of my life, but even through hardship, my commitment to this club never changed. During the toughest moments, I gave everything I had for this badge."

The defender reserved special words for the supporters, calling Anfield "a truly special place" and insisting he never took for granted the privilege of playing in front of Liverpool's fans.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go," Konate added, before signing off: "See you again soon, Inshallah."

Konate's exit leaves Liverpool with a significant gap to fill at the heart of their defence, with the 25-year-old certain to attract strong interest from clubs across Europe as a free agent.
