Konate in Advanced Talks to Join Real Madrid on a Free Transfer

3 days ago·1 min

Ibrahima Konate is closing in on a move to Real Madrid, with the France centre-back in advanced talks over a free transfer to the La Liga giants once his Liverpool contract expires at the end of June, according to BBC Sport and the Daily Telegraph.

Liverpool confirmed on Sunday that Konate would depart at the conclusion of his current deal. Negotiations over an extension had been ongoing, but discussions broke down after the club and the 27-year-old failed to agree on his value and wages.

End of an era at Anfield

Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions during his four years at the club, contributing to a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cup victories.

The defender originally arrived at Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 in a deal worth £35 million. He now looks set to walk away from Merseyside without a transfer fee changing hands.

Following in Alexander-Arnold's footsteps

Should the move be confirmed, Konate would become the second Liverpool player in consecutive summers to make the switch to Real Madrid for nothing. Trent Alexander-Arnold completed a free transfer to the Spanish capital last year, continuing a remarkable recruitment trend for the Bernabeu club.

Real Madrid's ability to attract top talent at the end of their contracts — including players of Konate's calibre — underlines the enduring appeal of the club on the global stage.
