La Liga president Javier Tebas has issued a scathing public indictment of FIFA, calling on president Gianni Infantino to resign and accusing the governing body of prioritising its own interests over the good of the game.

Tebas delivered his broadside in the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup 2026, directing his sharpest criticism at reports that the 2030 World Cup could be expanded to 64 teams — a move he described as a direct threat to the stability of football's wider ecosystem.

Leagues and federations under threat

The La Liga chief argued that domestic competitions and leagues form the backbone of the sport, sustaining thousands of jobs and keeping the game alive at every level. He warned that reckless decisions from FIFA's leadership put all of that at risk.

Tebas also took aim at what he described as manufactured stoppages during the World Cup 2026, singling out hydration breaks as a commercial convenience rather than a genuine welfare measure.
