La Liga's Financial Rules Ended Barcelona's Pursuit of Nico Williams, Says Agent

1 hour ago·2 min

Barcelona's hopes of signing Athletic Club winger Nico Williams are firmly over, with the player's agent confirming that the club's inability to guarantee squad registration under LaLiga's strict financial regulations was the decisive factor.

Euro 2024 sparked the interest

Williams first attracted Barcelona's attention through his standout performances during Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign. Although Athletic Club initially resisted all approaches, talks gained fresh momentum when the Basque club indicated they would sanction his departure if Barcelona met his €60 million release clause.

That willingness, however, was never enough to bridge the gap. Barcelona's well-documented financial difficulties meant the club could not assure Williams that he would be registered to play under LaLiga's spending controls — a risk too great to accept.

A World Cup cycle too important to gamble

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Williams and his camp decided that sporting certainty outweighed the allure of a move to Camp Nou. The winger instead committed his future to Athletic Club, signing a new contract that runs until 2035 and carries an upgraded €90 million release clause.

Agent Félix Tainta revealed how close the transfer had come to materialising. "He renewed in December 2023, even though he was due to be a free agent in 2024," Tainta explained. "We understood he couldn't leave for free. We renewed with the same clause. Nico had the idea of leaving."

Tainta was direct about the reasoning behind the ultimate decision to stay. "However, in a World Cup year, if there were no guarantees that he could play, we couldn't take the risk," he said.

Financial constraints continue to define Barcelona's transfer activity

The collapse of the Williams deal is the latest high-profile casualty of Barcelona's ongoing battle to comply with LaLiga's financial fair-play framework. Despite their ambitions, the Catalan club have repeatedly found themselves unable to follow through on marquee signings due to registration restrictions.

For Williams, the outcome is a long-term deal with Athletic Club and the assurance that he will feature prominently ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 — a competition where, as a key member of Spain's squad, he will be eager to shine on football's biggest stage.
