Leeds Stun Nottingham Forest With Late Stach Free-Kick on Opening Day

1 hour ago·1 min

Anton Stach's stunning long-range free-kick in the closing stages handed Leeds a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, handing Oliver Glasner a painful start to his Premier League tenure as Forest manager.

Nigeria international Ola Aina featured from the start for Forest, lining up in the opening-day XI before being replaced in the 74th minute.

Stach's moment of brilliance

For much of the afternoon, the match appeared destined for a goalless draw. Then Stach, known for his delivery from dead balls, caught Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels completely off guard — his long-range effort threading through a gap at the near post to seal all three points for Leeds.

The goal was fitting given how heavily set pieces shaped the contest. Igor Jesus squandered two headed opportunities — the first saved by James Trafford in the first half, the second nodded over shortly after the restart. Substitute Chris Wood also dragged a decent chance wide for Forest.

Sels goes from hero to villain

Sels had earlier produced the standout moment of the match, clawing out Tarik Muharemovic's goalbound header with a superb stop to keep Forest level. The save proved hollow, however, as Stach's free-kick rendered it meaningless moments later.

Glasner's tenure at the City Ground begins with a defeat — a tough opening for the Austrian coach as he looks to establish Forest in the top flight.
