James Trafford appears set to leave Manchester City for the second time, with Leeds United emerging as the frontrunners to secure the goalkeeper's signature after Newcastle United pulled out of the race.

City brought Trafford back from Burnley last summer but quickly pivoted to sign Italy captain Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, leaving the 23-year-old with just four Premier League appearances across the entire campaign. Donnarumma went on to start the remaining 34 league matches, and Trafford's vision of becoming Pep Guardiola's number one at the Etihad Stadium evaporated rapidly.

Newcastle united step back from the race

Newcastle United had identified Trafford as their preferred option to replace Nick Pope, but according to The Athletic, the club are now no longer considering a move for the England international. The Magpies are instead exploring alternatives, with Brighton & Hove Albion's Carl Rushworth and Parma's Zion Suzuki among those on their radar. Newcastle have also already moved to sign French Under-21 goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims.

Leeds United's case for Trafford

Leeds United are now in advanced discussions with Manchester City over a deal. The club need a new goalkeeper following Karl Darlow's departure to Manchester United, though their pursuit of a number one had reportedly been in motion regardless of that move.

Leeds correspondent Beren Cross reports that Trafford wants to play far more regularly than he managed at City last season, and would be the undisputed first choice at Elland Road. Leeds are also expected to highlight their record of helping players — citing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anton Stach as examples — regain their international footing.

The club's goalkeeping situation demanded action. Illan Meslier's prolonged decline has seen him finally depart, Lucas Perri endured a difficult debut season in England, and Darlow's exit left a clear void. Manager Daniel Farke is understood to be confident that Trafford can be persuaded that Elland Road is the right move for his career.

Trafford's record at City

Despite his limited league involvement, Trafford was a fixture in City's cup campaigns, featuring in every match across the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. City won both trophies, conceding only five goals across 12 ties — and Trafford kept clean sheets in both Wembley finals.

The Cumbrian shot-stopper began his professional journey at Carlisle United before joining Manchester City's academy in 2015. He made his name at Burnley after loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers, featuring 28 times for the Clarets in their debut Premier League season.

Should a deal be concluded, Trafford would face his former club for the first time when Leeds United visit Manchester City in the Premier League in December.
