Leeds United have made a winning start to their season in emphatic fashion, defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground on Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Carabao Cup — their second victory at that ground in just 72 hours.

Goals from Dan James and James Justin did the damage for Daniel Farke's side, who had also claimed three Premier League points at the same venue last Saturday. Before that weekend visit, Leeds had not won at the City Ground since 1972.

James breaks the deadlock

Forest showed early signs of life in the opening stages. James Trafford was tested in the 10th minute, producing a fine save to deny Ola Aina's stinging cross-shot, and Justin was on hand to keep out Igor Jesus' header moments later.

Leeds grew into the contest and created a clear opening midway through the first half. James found space down the right and rolled a pull-back across the box, but Sean Longstaff's shot from that position went straight to Matz Sels. At the other end, Joe Rodon produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Chris Wood, and Sels also kept out a low effort from James.

The deadlock finally broke five minutes after the interval. Aina's header went astray, and Longstaff seized on the loose ball, surging forward before slipping James in behind. The Wales international kept his composure and clipped a finish into the net.

Justin wraps it up

Forest nearly responded immediately. Arnaud Kalimuendo's cutback sat perfectly for Wood, but Trafford produced another sharp stop to deny him, before Noah Okafor sent an attempt just wide on a Leeds counter-attack.

Leeds put the result beyond doubt with 15 minutes left in untidy fashion. Lucas Nmecha bundled an effort goalwards, only for Williams to block it on the line, but Justin was quickest to react and forced the ball over.

For new Forest manager Oliver Glasner, it is a difficult opening to his tenure, though the club have agreed a £50 million deal to sign Chelsea striker Liam Delap, with further reinforcements expected to follow.
