Letexier Steps In as Ivory Coast Face Ecuador in World Cup 2026 Group E Opener

France's François Letexier will referee the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E opener between Ivory Coast and Ecuador on Sunday, June 14, after England's Michael Oliver withdrew from the fixture through injury.
The match kicks off at 7pm local time at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with midnight the corresponding kick-off time in the United Kingdom.
Oliver's injury forces late change
Premier League referee Oliver pulled out of the assignment earlier this week. FIFA confirmed that his entire officiating crew will also sit out the game, as they operate as a unified team. The governing body added that Oliver remains in North America and is expected to be available for selection in the coming days, with further matches still to come in the tournament.
Letexier's big-game pedigree
Letexier is no stranger to high-stakes occasions. At 35, he became the youngest referee to officiate a European Championship final when he took charge of the Euro 2024 decider between England and Spain. His most recent competitive assignment before this was Aston Villa's UEFA Europa League final victory over Freiburg.
The Ligue 1 referee will be flanked by assistants Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni. Khalid Al-Turais serves as fourth official, with Mohammed Al-Bakry from Saudi Arabia acting as reserve assistant referee.
Australian Premier League official Jarred Gillett will oversee VAR duties, supported by France's Willy Delajod and Belgium's Bram Van Driessche.
High stakes in Group E
Both Ivory Coast and Ecuador will be acutely aware of the challenge ahead, having watched Germany dismantle Curacao in the first Group E fixture of the day. The two sides are separated by just nine places in the FIFA World Rankings — Ecuador sitting 24th and Ivory Coast 33rd — making Sunday's contest an evenly matched battle from the outset.
