With a sweeping left-footed strike in the 21st minute, Livano Comenencia delivered something no Curaçao player had ever managed before: a FIFA World Cup goal. The moment, which arrived during their Group E opener against Germany on 14 June in Houston, Texas, instantly became part of football history — and a Father's Day gift Liomar Comenencia will never forget.
The goal that stopped a nation
Curaçao were trailing 1-0 when defender Nico Schlotterbeck's timely tackle sent the ball spilling loose near the edge of the German penalty area. Comenencia reacted quickest, cutting across the 18-yard line before driving a low, first-time effort past Manuel Neuer and into the bottom-left corner of the net.
Germany recovered to win 7-1, but the significance of that equaliser — Curaçao's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal — was not diminished by the final scoreline.
