Liverpool and Arsenal Battle for Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi After World Cup Breakthrough

Liverpool are in talks to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old Morocco international who announced himself to the world at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Arsenal also pursuing the Lille midfielder, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and TEAMTalk's Graeme Bailey.

Two giants circle a teenage star

Bouaddi's rise has been swift and undeniable. The central midfielder was one of Morocco's standout performers at the World Cup, catching the eye with a composed and authoritative display against Brazil that underlined Morocco's continued presence among world football's elite — a reminder that their run to the semi-finals at the 2022 Qatar tournament was no accident.

Romano has confirmed that both Liverpool and Arsenal have already held direct meetings with Bouaddi's agent, signalling the seriousness of their respective pursuits. The player is expected to take stock of all available options following the conclusion of the World Cup before making a decision.

Liverpool's search for midfield quality

For Liverpool, the move fits a broader rebuild under new manager Andoni Iraola, who took charge following the dismissal of Arne Slot. The club are shedding experienced names and pivoting toward younger, high-ceiling talent as they look to recapture the form that delivered the Premier League title in 2024/25.

The departure of Mohamed Salah, whose nine-year stint at the club drew to a close this summer, has sharpened attention on Liverpool's recruitment. The Reds are also reported to be pursuing Yan Diomande of Ivory Coast, further highlighting their appetite for African talent.

Bouaddi, still just 18, has drawn praise for a maturity that belies his age — particularly his ability to minimise errors in high-pressure situations, a quality that sets him apart from most senior midfielders, let alone peers of his generation.

With two of England's biggest clubs at the table, and the World Cup stage only adding to his profile, Bouaddi is set to be one of the most sought-after names in the upcoming transfer window.
