Liverpool Open Talks With Iraola as Slot Successor Search Begins

4 days ago·1 min

Liverpool have entered into formal discussions with Andoni Iraola over the possibility of the Spanish coach taking charge at Anfield following the departure of Arne Slot, according to Sky Sports.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is spearheading the process — a notable detail given that it was Hughes who originally brought Iraola to Bournemouth in 2023, before Hughes himself made the move to Anfield a year later.

Sky Sports News had reported in the days after Slot's dismissal on Saturday that Iraola was the leading candidate and that formal talks were imminent. Those conversations have now begun.

The right fit, not just the fastest appointment

Liverpool's priority throughout this process has been to find a manager who aligns with the club's preferred style of play. The club are committed to following a structured, thorough process rather than rushing into a decision — even as they acknowledge the desire to appoint someone without undue delay.

No approach has yet been made to any potential members of a new coaching staff. Liverpool say those discussions would only begin once negotiations with Iraola reach an advanced stage.

Iraola's record at Bournemouth

Iraola's work at Bournemouth made him one of the most closely watched managers in the Premier League. The Cherries embarked on an 18-game unbeaten run across the second half of the 2025/26 season, ultimately securing a sixth-place finish and a place in the UEFA Europa League. Bournemouth finished the campaign only three points behind Liverpool in the final table.

The track record Hughes witnessed first-hand at Bournemouth appears to be a significant factor in Liverpool's pursuit of Iraola as they look to plot a new course after Slot's exit.
