Nigeria's Ademola Lookman was on the pitch as Atlético Madrid edged past Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Saturday, extending their winning form in La Liga.

The Super Eagles winger made his 10th La Liga appearance of the season under Diego Simeone, putting in an energetic shift in the opening half before being withdrawn at the break in favour of Robin Le Normand.

Álvarez settles a tight affair

The first half yielded no goals despite a competitive contest between the two sides. Atlético did not have to wait long after the restart, however — the deadlock was broken in the 48th minute through a move of real quality.

The attack developed down the right before being switched sharply to the left, where Alejandro Grimaldo delivered a precise pass into the path of Julián Álvarez, who finished with composure to hand the hosts the lead.

Deportivo pushed hard for a share of the spoils in the closing stages, testing goalkeeper Jan Oblak and maintaining pressure on the Atlético backline. The hosts' defensive discipline did not waver, though, as they held out for a clean sheet and the full three points.
