Lucas Bergvall Requests Tottenham Exit in Search of Regular Football

Lucas Bergvall has formally asked to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with the 20-year-old seeking guaranteed first-team football after a frustrating end to the 2025/26 season.
The Swedish midfielder, currently representing his country at the FIFA World Cup 2026, informed the club of his desire to move on in search of a fresh start and consistent playing time at senior level.
Limited minutes under De Zerbi
Bergvall managed just 112 minutes of football during Roberto De Zerbi's opening six games in charge at Spurs — starting once and largely appearing from the bench. The lack of opportunity has driven his decision to seek a transfer.
He arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from Swedish side Djurgarden during the 2024 winter window and remains under contract at the club until June 2031. Before committing to Spurs, Barcelona had expressed strong interest in the midfielder, with Bergvall even holding talks with the club's football director Deco before choosing north London.
Spurs push for midfield reinforcements
Bergvall's departure request arrives at a complicated moment for Tottenham Hotspur, who are actively seeking to strengthen their midfield this summer. The club submitted an £80 million bid for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali on Saturday, only for Newcastle to turn it down.
The Spurs hierarchy have pledged full backing for De Zerbi following a turbulent campaign that saw the club narrowly escape relegation with a second successive 17th-place Premier League finish. Centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who worked with De Zerbi at Brighton, has already arrived for £52 million as the rebuild gathers pace.
Looking ahead to 2026/27
Tottenham Hotspur begin the 2026/27 Premier League season away at Brentford on August 22 — a Saturday evening kick-off at the Gtech Community Stadium that marks De Zerbi's first full campaign at the helm. The opening London derby is followed by a home fixture against Newcastle on August 29.
