Lukaku's Instant Impact Denies Egypt Historic First World Cup Win

2 days ago·2 min

Egypt came agonisingly close to making World Cup history on Monday before Romelu Lukaku ended their 92-year wait for a first victory at the tournament — just 22 seconds after stepping off the bench to force a Mohamed Hany own goal that earned Belgium a 1-1 draw in their Group G opener in Seattle.

Emam Ashour had given the Pharaohs a dream start with a spectacular 19th-minute strike from distance in the scorching Seattle heat, handing Egypt their first half-time lead at a World Cup. The seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions looked composed and dangerous throughout the first period.

Salah's birthday assist

The occasion was made all the more special by Mohamed Salah, who celebrated his 34th birthday by teeing up Ashour's opener — becoming the first African player on record, since 1966, to register a goal involvement at a World Cup on his birthday. It was a milestone moment for one of the game's greats.

Kevin De Bruyne, Salah's long-time rival in European football, did his best to spoil the celebration. The Belgian playmaker struck the post with a curling second-half free-kick and registered Belgium's first shot on target shortly after, finally sparking the Red Devils into life.

Lukaku changes everything

Belgium coach brought on Lukaku, the country's all-time leading scorer, and the Napoli striker needed no time to make his mark. Within 22 seconds of his introduction, he drove into the area from Thomas Meunier's cross and Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

Belgium then pushed for a winner but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier stood firm, producing a brilliant full-stretch save to deny Brandon Mechele's header in the 82nd minute. Lukaku himself headed over a late opportunity as the match ended level.

What's next

The result leaves both sides with one point apiece in Group G. Belgium face Iran in their next fixture, while Egypt — still searching for that elusive first World Cup win — turn their attention to New Zealand.
