Maddison Marks Return with Stunning Strike as Tottenham Down Coventry

53 minutes ago·2 min

Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory of the season, beating Coventry City at home, with James Maddison producing a brilliant performance on his first start in 18 months.

Maddison steals the show

Maddison was the standout performer of the evening, earning an 8 out of 10 rating. The midfielder constantly probed and prompted, capping a superb return to the starting line-up with a stunning strike before tiring late on — understandably so after such a long absence.

Micky van de Ven was another Spurs bright spot, rated 7, producing an outstanding first-half tackle to deny Brandon Thomas-Asante and maintaining a solid display throughout. Archie Gray kept busy and contributed a creative edge, earning a 6.

Questions remain over Tonali and Solanke

Sandro Tonali again offered only occasional glimpses of quality and continues to struggle to justify his £100 million fee. Dominic Solanke was tireless in his movement but had little reward, picking up a booking and seeing a first-half effort sail over. Both were rated 5.

Omar Marmoush had a difficult night overall but rescued his rating with a superb goal. Andrew Robertson contributed with trademark driving runs before picking up an injury and being replaced. Jan Paul van Hecke endured an uncertain evening, losing possession for Coventry's goal, though he did produce one brave clearance.

Davies seals it off the bench

Substitute Ben Davies, who came on in the 69th minute, provided the experienced presence Spurs needed to see out the result — and added a goal to round off the evening, earning a 6. Conor Gallagher and Mateus Fernandes, both introduced at the same time, struggled to make an impact and were each rated 5.

Coventry's bright moments

Despite the defeat, Coventry City had their moments. Bobby Thomas was excellent at the back, rated 7 for a commanding performance that included a vital headed clearance. Jack Rudoni showed determination to bundle his way through for a goal and also earned a 7.

Milan van Ewijk caused problems with long throws, particularly in the first half, while Tatsuhiro Sakamoto delivered some dangerous crosses and carved out a good chance of his own. Carl Rushworth was largely untroubled for the first two goals but was at fault for Davies' third.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka came off the bench for Coventry but neither was able to shift the momentum, rated 5 apiece.
