Man Utd Step Back From Ederson Deal but Leave Door Open for Return

Manchester United have stepped back from signing midfielder Ederson this summer after a medical flagged a potential concern, but the club have not closed the door on a renegotiated deal before the transfer window shuts.
United had agreed a £37.8 million structure with Atalanta and reached personal terms with the Brazilian in June, with a full medical and formal completion targeted for early July. Those plans unravelled after Ederson received a late call-up to the Brazil squad for the World Cup, following an injury to Wesley, which forced part of the medical to be conducted in the United States.
Medical complications derail the initial agreement
An initial check in the US indicated a potential issue. Rather than act immediately, United deferred a comprehensive examination — involving third-party specialists — until after Brazil's tournament concluded. That time was used productively: the club continued background checks and accelerated moves for other transfer targets.
The full medical was completed last week and United have concluded they will not proceed on the original agreed terms. The club are understood to be deeply sympathetic towards Ederson and his family throughout this process.
A return for the player before the window closes remains possible, but only if market conditions and a renegotiated price allow it. Sky Sports News has confirmed that the imminent arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea is entirely separate and was not pursued as a replacement for Ederson.
United move quickly on other targets
While the Ederson situation developed, United worked decisively on strengthening other areas of the squad. The club are triggering the release clause in Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans' contract, with the fee understood to be in the region of £36 million.
The £50 million signing of Santos from Chelsea is set to be announced imminently, while goalkeeper Karl Darlow will arrive on a free transfer from Leeds. United continue to pursue squad improvements within their defined budget.
