Manchester City and Chelsea in Legal Standoff Over Enzo Maresca Compensation

Manchester City's pursuit of Enzo Maresca as their next manager has hit a significant obstacle, with Chelsea demanding compensation that has stalled his formal appointment at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca departed Stamford Bridge in January 2026, leaving three-and-a-half years on his contract. Chelsea have declined to grant him a contractual release, making it impossible for the Italian to be confirmed as Pep Guardiola's successor until a financial settlement is reached.
Legal teams closing in on a deal
According to Sky Sports, Manchester City are optimistic that a compensation agreement can be finalised by the end of this week. Negotiations are now in the hands of each club's respective lawyers, with Chelsea holding firm on receiving the largest possible payout.
The dispute initially centred on a seven-figure compensation demand — a figure Manchester City contested before entering formal talks. Chelsea have so far refused to budge without full financial satisfaction.
Once an agreement is struck, Manchester City expect to formally announce Maresca as manager, with the club anticipating the news as early as this weekend.
Filling Guardiola's boots
Maresca inherits a daunting legacy. Guardiola ended his reign at the Etihad Stadium at the close of the 2025/26 season, having added the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup to his already extraordinary trophy haul — one that includes six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League.
Reports indicate that Maresca has already held conversations with Guardiola himself, as well as discussions with Manchester City's hierarchy over plans for the summer transfer window.
The new manager's first competitive tests are expected to come during Manchester City's pre-season tour of Far East Asia, ahead of what will be a closely watched debut Etihad campaign.
