Manchester City have reached an agreement to bring Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli back to Etihad Stadium, signing him from Marseille for £1.7m on a two-year contract.

Rulli, 34, first spent time at City during the 2016-17 season but never made a first-team appearance. This move marks his return to a club he knows well, now arriving as backup to number one Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Rulli's place in Europa League history

The Argentine keeper is perhaps best remembered for his starring role in Villarreal's dramatic 2021 UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United. Rulli both scored his own penalty and made the decisive save to deny David de Gea, sending Villarreal to victory in one of the most memorable shootouts in European football.

A decorated international career

At international level, Rulli has earned eight caps for Argentina and was a member of the squad that lifted both the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America. His career in club football has taken him across Europe, with stints at Real Sociedad, Montpellier, and Ajax alongside his time at Marseille.

Replacing Trafford at City

Rulli arrives as a direct replacement for England goalkeeper James Trafford, who departed City earlier this week to join Leeds in a transfer worth up to £45m. With Donnarumma established as first choice, Rulli steps into the role of experienced deputy as City look to maintain strong goalkeeping depth in their squad.
