Manchester United and Chelsea Chase Sporting CP Wonderkid Flavio Goncalves

1 hour ago·2 min

Manchester United and Chelsea are both tracking Sporting CP winger Flavio Goncalves, with reports suggesting the Premier League rivals are ready to submit offers for the 19-year-old Portuguese prospect.

Goncalves has made a rapid impression at the highest level, registering three goals in seven Liga Portugal appearances this season and adding a UEFA Champions League debut to his growing résumé. Despite having fewer than 10 senior league starts to his name, the teenager has drawn comparisons to players as celebrated as Cristiano Ronaldo and Florian Wirtz.

A remarkable discovery story

The winger was born in northern France to Portuguese parents and was spotted at a six-a-side tournament in Paris by Carlos Rente, an agent at the Gestifute agency and the uncle of Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana. That chance sighting set Goncalves on a path that would take him from Rio Ave's youth ranks—where he spent three years—to Sporting CP's academy at the age of 12 in 2019.

He went on to make 45 appearances for Sporting's B-team across the second and third tiers of Portuguese football before receiving his first-team call-up in a cup fixture in October 2025. Three league outings followed last season, and he made his first league start in August of this year.

Release clause and contract situation

Sporting CP hold Goncalves on a contract running until the summer of 2030, and his release clause stands at around £51 million. The Lisbon club are reportedly keen to extend his deal and raise that figure, but intense interest from across Europe is likely to complicate those negotiations.

According to a source cited by Caught Offside, both Chelsea and Manchester United have scouted Goncalves extensively and are now prepared to approach Sporting directly with formal offers.

European competition brewing

The Premier League pair face competition from the Bundesliga, where RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund are all said to be monitoring the youngster. Unnamed clubs from Spain and Italy are also reported to have expressed interest.

A versatile attacking midfielder capable of operating centrally or on either flank, Goncalves will be in action when third-placed Sporting CP host Academico Viseu in the Liga Portugal on Sunday evening.
