Manchester United Slide Deeper Into Crisis After 2-0 Champions League Defeat to Atletico Madrid

1 hour ago·1 min

Manchester United's troubled season has taken another damaging turn after the club suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, extending their winless run to five matches across all competitions.

Pablo Barrios opened the scoring for the hosts in Madrid, before Ademola Lookman added a second to seal a comprehensive victory for Diego Simeone's side. United's miserable evening was compounded when Leny Yoro received a red card, leaving his teammates to defend with ten men for a portion of the contest.

Pressure builds on Carrick

The result piles further pressure on manager Michael Carrick, whose side have now failed to win in five successive outings. A run of this length, spanning domestic and European football, raises serious questions about the club's form and direction heading into a critical phase of the season.

Atletico Madrid, by contrast, were dominant on home soil — clinical in attack and resolute at the back — and barely looked troubled by a United side that offered little going forward.

Lookman's contribution underlines the continued threat the Nigeria international poses at the highest level of club football. The winger, who has been in sharp form for club and country, was once again a decisive figure on a big European stage.
