Maurizio Mariani to Referee Brazil vs Japan at FIFA World Cup 2026

2 hours ago·2 min

Italian official Maurizio Mariani has been confirmed as the referee for Brazil's round of 32 clash against Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the match set to take place at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday.

The appointment marks Mariani's third assignment of this tournament. He previously officiated Uruguay and Saudi Arabia's 1-1 draw in Group H, as well as Colombia's 1-0 win over DR Congo.

Mariani's record so far

The 44-year-old has not shown a single red card during this World Cup. Across his two matches to date, he has issued only four yellow cards — a notably measured approach to the tournament.

Most recently, Mariani took charge of the UEFA Conference League final between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano last month, underlining his experience at the highest level of the game.

The full officiating team

Mariani will be flanked by fellow Italians Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni as assistant referees. Switzerland's Sando Schaerer takes on the fourth official role, with Stephane De Almeida serving as the reserve official. Details of the VAR team had not been confirmed at the time of writing.

How the teams arrived here

Brazil advanced from Group C as winners, recording two victories and a draw across the group stage. Japan, meanwhile, finished second in Group F without losing a single match — drawing against Netherlands and Sweden either side of a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia.

Their meeting in Houston is the first of a triple-header on Monday. Germany face Paraguay in Boston later in the day, before Netherlands and Morocco meet in Monterrey to close out the evening's action.

The round of 32 got underway on Sunday when Canada, co-hosts of the tournament, edged past South Africa 1-0 thanks to Stephen Eustaquio's injury-time winner — setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely contested knockout stage.
