Mbappé Breaks Knockout Record as France Demolish Sweden 3-0

2 hours ago·2 min

Kylian Mbappé delivered a historic performance at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday, netting twice to steer France to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 32.

The result — France's largest margin of victory in a World Cup knockout match since they beat Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 final — sends Didier Deschamps' side into a round-of-16 encounter against Paraguay on July 4 in Philadelphia.

Record-breaking Mbappé

Mbappé's opening goal, a brilliant individual effort in the 45th minute, made history. He cut across Viktor Gyökeres and drilled a shot past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström following a slick one-two with Ousmane Dembélé. That strike was his ninth goal across nine knockout-stage appearances at the World Cup — more than any other player in tournament history, surpassing Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo, who each scored eight.

The moment carried added emotional weight. After the goal, the 27-year-old sprinted directly to coach Deschamps, who was returning to the dugout for the first time since missing France's final group-stage match against Norway to attend his mother's funeral in Europe.

Barcola and Olise add their mark

Bradley Barcola extended France's lead early in the second half, with Michael Olise claiming the assist. Olise also set up Mbappé's second goal of the night — a composed finish into the far corner from a perfectly weighted pass — in the 74th minute.

The assist tally was a tournament highlight in its own right: Olise now has five assists at this World Cup, the most by any player at a men's World Cup since Thomas Hässler's five for Germany in 1994.

Chasing Messi's all-time record

Mbappé's brace brought his tally for the 2026 tournament to six goals, drawing level with Argentina's Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Across his entire World Cup career, Mbappé now stands at 18 goals in 18 games — just one behind Messi, who has 19 goals across 29 World Cup appearances.

France are through to the round of 16 brimming with momentum, and Mbappé shows no signs of slowing down.
