France are through to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup after Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty proved the difference against a determined Paraguay side in Philadelphia.

The single goal — converted by Mbappé from the spot — was enough for the tournament favourites to advance, despite Paraguay making life difficult throughout the contest.

Paraguay gave France little room to breathe, defending with discipline and organisation for long stretches of the match. However, Mbappé's clinical finish from 12 yards ultimately settled the tie and confirmed France's place in the last eight.

France now turn their attention to the quarter-final stage, where they will be expected to contend for the trophy as one of the competition's leading sides.
