McInally Urges Celtic to Retain Iheanacho Ahead of Summer Window

last week·1 min

Former Aston Villa striker Alan McInally has called on Celtic manager Martin O'Neill to hand Kelechi Iheanacho a contract extension this summer, arguing that the Nigeria international still has plenty to offer the Scottish champions.

Iheanacho arrived at Celtic Park on a free transfer last summer after leaving Spanish club Sevilla, penning a one-year deal that includes an option for a further 12 months. He went on to score nine goals in 24 appearances across all competitions — a return that McInally believes justifies keeping him at the club.

McInally's case for keeping Iheanacho

Speaking to the Daily Record, McInally was clear about his position. "I would keep him," he said. "If he can perform the way he did in the last six games over the course of the season, then he is obviously worth keeping."

McInally did, however, point to fitness and consistency as the central concerns surrounding Iheanacho's future. "That is the big question, though. It is about keeping him fit," he added. "I don't know if he's enjoying Glasgow too much — maybe Martin should put a tag on him."

The former striker stressed that the responsibility ultimately lies with Iheanacho himself. "It's up to him to have the discipline and the attitude to play week in, week out," McInally said. "Some players need a kick, and others need a hug, although most want a hug these days, but if Martin feels he can get him going again, then he is definitely worth keeping."

Celtic are yet to announce a decision on the Nigerian forward's future, and the club's final call is expected before the summer transfer window closes.
