McTominay Back in Full Napoli Training After Heart Surgery

Scott McTominay has returned to full training with Napoli after successfully recovering from heart surgery performed last month in Manchester.

The Scotland midfielder, 29, underwent an ablation procedure — a minimally invasive operation that corrects irregular heart rhythms — and the club confirmed the treatment was deemed a complete success.

Napoli confirmed on Wednesday that McTominay had undergone further diagnostic tests, which cleared him to return to the pitch. "The Napoli player therefore resumed training with the rest of the team after the period spent training separately," the club said in a statement.

How the condition was discovered

The issue first emerged during Napoli's 2-1 Serie A defeat to Como in August, when McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes. Subsequent medical checks revealed a mild benign arrhythmia — a condition in which the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly — prompting the corrective ablation procedure.

Ablation treatment involves applying heat or cold energy to create tiny scars within the heart, blocking faulty electrical signals and restoring a normal heartbeat, according to the British Heart Foundation.

Scotland fixtures missed

During his recovery period, McTominay was unavailable for four Scotland internationals, including Tuesday's UEFA Nations League loss to Slovenia. Scotland's upcoming fixtures — away trips to Switzerland and North Macedonia — are scheduled for November, and McTominay is now in contention to feature.
