Scott McTominay has come through surgery for a heart condition, with Napoli confirming the procedure was a complete success.

The Scotland international was diagnosed with mild benign arrhythmia — an irregular heartbeat — before undergoing an ablation at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning.

In a statement reported by talkSPORT, Napoli said: "On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success. McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training."

What is cardiac ablation?

Cardiac arrhythmia ablation is a relatively brief procedure. According to the British Heart Foundation, it can take as little as 15 minutes to complete.

Surgeons make a small incision in the patient's groin or wrist before inserting catheters and guiding them up to the heart. The tissue responsible for the abnormal rhythm is then targeted using either radiofrequency energy or cryoablation, blocking the faulty electrical signals causing the arrhythmia.

Club and international impact

McTominay featured in Napoli's opening two Serie A matches this season, including a 2-1 defeat to Como from which he was substituted. Max Allegri's side face Arsenal in their UEFA Champions League opener on Wednesday — a match McTominay will miss as he begins his recovery.

Napoli had previously indicated he would be sidelined until mid-October. If that timeline holds, McTominay will also be absent for Scotland's international fixtures during the extended break scheduled later this month, which includes four matches.
